Yoga, as defined in the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, one of the most precise and scientific scriptures ever written about yoga, serves to control the "fluctuations of the mind". This means that distracting thoughts are kept in check and the mind can focus and concentrate. This is done by focusing energy on a limited number of actions, such as breathing or holding postures, and by circulating blood to all areas of the body and supplying the brain with fresh oxygen and nutrient-rich blood. When you concentrate, you are mentally alert and focus all your senses for a longer period of time in order to stay with the task at hand. How long you can maintain this state depends not only on regular practice but also on your emotional state, physical condition, diet and environment. If your concentration is weakened because you don't feel physically fit, are emotionally upset or depressed, or your diet or surroundings (e.g. noises) are distracting you, you will naturally be unable to reach your full potential. The good news is that yoga has been proven to sustainably increase your concentration, which in turn helps you improve your performance and memory while keeping your mind calm.
